Jessica Fey, MS, RDN

Supervisor of Nutrition Services

Tell us about your job.

I am one of two supervisors of Nutrition Services at Norwalk-La Mirada USD. I usually oversee the daily meal production and operation of 17 elementary sites, including monitoring 45-55 employees’ performance to provide constructive guidance to address areas of concern. This year I am also focused on working with our Assistant Director at the district’s central kitchen, which allows me to wear my RDN hat more often as I assist with menu planning, special diets, and food procurement. It has also been quite an experience feeding the kids during the pandemic and distance learning. One word comes to mind: PIVOT!

What do you find most interesting about your job?

My days are never the same. One hour I’m sitting at my desk checking meal counts; the next hour, I’m out at a site assisting a cafeteria manager; and the next hour, I could be helping serve special diets or bulk meal bags to the community. I have learned to expect the unexpected, especially during this pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, I supervised the district office café and catering, so I learned how to run a mini restaurant and cater events. This position is a smorgasbord of varying tasks that keep me on my toes!

How did you get into this field?

I discovered my love for school nutrition during my dietetic internship. It was a rotation that I was looking least forward to, but I ended up enjoying it and finding my passion! Then, luckily, I had some great references that helped me land this position before I even finished my internship.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but we moved a lot. I was raised in Rocky Face, GA; Sheboygan Falls, WI; and finally settled in Anaheim Hills, CA in 1993. I’ve lived in multiple cities throughout Southern California since then.

Where did you go to college and/or complete an internship?

I completed both my BS in 2017 and MSDI in 2019 at California State University, Long Beach. Go Beach!

Besides your profession, what are your hobbies?

I’m a complete cinephile; I love movies and great TV. Outside of being a couch potato, I’m into Beachbody workout and nutrition programs to stay healthy. I’ve recently taken up hiking and look forward to traveling again to check out some great hiking spots. I also enjoy reading and playing video games with my son.

What are your favorite foods?

Sushi, garlic truffle French fries, and most anything with avocado

What is on your bucket list?

Traveling the world (seeing the Northern lights, Alaskan Cruise, Scotland, and more!); learning how to paint and make pottery; hiking some or all the Pacific Crest Trail; and most importantly, raising a kind and loving son.

How long have you been a member of NEP DPG? And why did you join?

I’ve been a member for only two months. Dr. Gail Frank recommended me for a great opportunity as the Public Policy and Advocacy Leader position; thankfully, I was selected for it. I am interested in legislature and policies, along with nutrition education, so it seemed a perfect addition to my career.
